Classes for ages 9-12

Primary Drama – Ages 9-10

This 75-minute class builds a team in creating theatre together: movement, voice, mask work, characterization and script work, with a continued focus on storytelling. This exploration of theatre through ensemble culminates in a stage play in the OST Student Showcase in May in the Richcraft Theatre.

Primary Musical – Age 9-10

*Previously called Junior Musical

Explore the world of musical theatre as you learn singing, dancing, and acting skills! Students will work on group singing as well as duets and solos; work together on choreographed dance; and explore character building. Enthusiasm, commitment, and team spirit are necessary to participate in this class. Students will work together from September to June, leading to a musical presentation in the OST Student Showcase in May.

Intermediate Drama – Age 11-12

This course focuses on acting skills as the individual within the group is explored in greater depth through movement, voice, mask work, characterization, and script work. This exploration of theatre will lead to a stage play in the OST Student Showcase in May in the Richcraft Theatre.

Intermediate Musical – Age 11-12

*Or 10 years old with pre-requisite

Designed for older children, Intermediate Musical deepens students’ understanding of musical theatre, touching on the history of the art form. Students will explore acting through speech and movement, basic musical theatre dance technique, and individual and group singing. Dance choreography will be taught to the full class, and 1 vocal coaching session will be provided to each student. Previous experience is not necessary, but enthusiasm, commitment and team spirit are essential! Students will work together from September to June, leading to a musical presentation in the OST Student Showcase in May in the Richcraft Theatre.

This class is for 11-12 year olds, or 10 year olds who have previously taken our Primary Musical (or Junior Musical) class.

Junior Classics – Age 9-12

Have fun with theatre origins! Child-appropriate segments of Commedia dell’arte, Shakespeare, Greek Tragedy, Chekhov, and other classics will be explored. This class lays a foundation for future theatre endeavours and teaches literacy and speech skills. Students will discover the historical settings, learn the character voices and physicality, and speak and feel character emotions. This exploration of theatre origins culminates in a stage play in the OST Student Showcase in May in the Richcraft Theatre.

Collective Creation – Age 9-12

*Previously called Young Creators

Discover the power of stories and character as you work to create your own! This class is designed as a first experience in collective creation; the art of creating a show with your class collaborators. Benefits of this class include teamwork, cooperation, imagination, focus, and a greater understanding of the creation process. This very popular class was previously known as Young Creators, and will continue to teach the content of that much beloved class as students work as an ensemble to create and act in their own show, culminating in a performance in the OST Student Showcase in May in the Richcraft Theatre.

While any student aged 9-12 can join this class, previous theatre experience is recommended as this class builds on previously taught acting skills.

Audition Monologues – Age 12+

This 12-week class will help you perfect your monologue(s) and get you ready for any audition. You may bring in your monologue(s) or choose from some provided; pieces may include music or be musical, be comic or tragic. You might want to work on a short performance piece inspired by poetry, music or something else! Ideal for students preparing for a specific audition opportunity.

March Break Camp – Age 9-12

Time: 9:00am to 4:00pm (pre/post-care: available from 8 to 9 am and 4 to 5 pm)

Join Ottawa School of Theatre for an exciting week of theatre magic! Theatre study builds character, fosters teamwork, creative thinking and self-confidence. OST day-campers get the chance to put on a show and act on stage just like the pros.
