All-ages plays – Child/Youth/Adult/Family Class
A close-to-professional experience culminating in a full stage ench copurseproduction. Learn about theatre – character development, stage business, voice and movement – with a focus on fun. A great experience for the whole family.
This year’s winter play is The Polar Express. Auditions will be held in September, with rehearsals running from September until Nov. 26. Show dates are Nov. 24, 25 and 26, 2017.
The spring play is Peter Pan. Auditions will be held in January 2018, with rehearsals taking place from February until June 9. Show dates are June 8 and 9, 2018.
Fee: $50 for current OST students & families/$200 for non-OST students/family. Rehearsals are on Sundays with some weeknights and/or Saturdays, depepnding on individual roles. Register.

 

Ages 8+: Theatre Exam
Students who want to work towards the Royal Conservatory Speech and Dramatic Arts exam will meet with the artistic director to discuss which exam would be the best choice. They would then do some work choosing performance pieces, with the artistic director assigning a teacher to work one-on-one in preparation for the exam. There will be a Master Class for students to practice and share their work.

Fee: $200 (does not include exam fee or individual coaching fees).
RC exam fees: range from $138 to $275, depending on age, experience and exam length.

Ages 4+: Home-School Drama 
Students will study theatre and collaborate in the creation of their own story through character study, voice and movement and story telling in a 90-minute class leading to an in-studio performance.

Ages 9-10: Primary Drama 
This 75-minute class builds a team in creating theatre together, utilizing movement, voice, mask work, characterization and some script work. This exploration of theatre leads to a presentation at the end of each term and a stage play in the Spring Student Showcase. Class size is limited.

Ages 12-13: Teen Acting and Performance 
Build on acting skills with a more advanced study of improvisation and monologues. Students will work on and develop movement, voice, blocking, script work and other stage business, some may want to design their own costumes, set and props, and program cover. Singing, dancing and acting. Students will work together from September to June in three terms. Students will work on voice and movement with expert instruction. The audience will enjoy their stage production in the Spring Student Showcase. Class size is limited.

Ages 12+: Circus (third term)
And the circus is full of thrill and freedom: juggle, tumble and clown, while developing character and integrating it all into an ever-moving story.  No experience necessary, just an active imagination and a sense of adventure. YOUTH/YOUNG ADULT
Ages 12+: On-Camera – Episodic Web Series   
Acting for the camera, students will learn and practice the basics of filmmaking and acting. This class provides students with an opportunity for artistic expression as together, with their teacher, they create an episodic web series to be aired every two weeks. Students may visit other OST classes to tape and create an OST commercial for social media and the OST website. The audience will enjoy their production in the Spring Student Showcase. Class size is limited.

Ages 13+: Teen Shakespeare – Ghosts and The Supernatural (first term) / Costumes and Comedy (second term)/ Battles and Death Scenes (third term)
Be readyfor your high-school Shakespeare study. With an emphasis on play, physicality, character and emotion, Shakespeare makes for exciting and dynamic theatre. In the first term, meet Shakepeare’s ghosts and magical characters! Find costumes and present them at end of term. The second term focuses on Shakespeare’s many comedic scenes of mistaken identity and hilarious adventures. Dress it up and present at the end of term. Battles and death scenes, meanwhile, are an actor’s dream. The third term will incorporate the first two terms as students learn how to fight and die on stage. The audience will enjoy their stage production in the Spring Student Showcase. Class size is limited.

Ages 13+: Tour to Young Audiences   
What is acting all about? Sharing! This class builds a show and shares it with audiences of all ages. Learn about the aspects of touring: putting up/striking sets, caring for props and costumes, dealing with challenges of varying performance spaces. The class will tour up to five venues and may require students to miss two or three days of school. This exploration of theatre and acting will lead to performances at Ottawa primary schools and the Ottawa Children’s Festival, as well as a performance in the OST Spring Student Showcase. Class size is limited.

Ages 13+: Teen Advanced Musical    
Advanced triple threat: singing, dancing and acting. Students will work together with an Ottawa triple-threat professional. Previous experience is an asset; enthusiasm, commitment and team spirit are necessary to participate in this class. The ability to play a musical instrument is a bonus. Students will work with guest experts on voice and movement. The audience will enjoy their stage production in the OST Spring Student Works Showcase. Class size is limited.

Ages 14+: Teen Creators – Collaborate on Creation, Directing and Design

Ages 12+: Audition Master Class
This class will help you perfect your monologue(s) and get you ready for any audition. You may bring in your monologue(s) or choose from some provided; they may include music or be musical, comic or tragic. You might want to work on a short performance piece inspired by poetry, music or something else. Class size is limited. one term, 12 week session.

Acting for the Mature Theatre Lover
Learn about acting in a fun environment. Discover how to lift a script off the page and bring it to life on the stage. You will overcome your inhibitions about performing in front of others, learn the basics of becoming a character in a play, hone your acting chops and rehearse scenes for a performance onstage in front of a gentle audience. You’re never too old to become a star! Prerequisites: A wish for adventure. No other experience or training is required.

Les élèves présenteront un spectacle portes-ouvertes à la fin des deux premières sessions, ainsi qu’une pièce en tournée au printemps. La classe ira visiter jusqu’à cinq lieux. L’étudiant devra manquer deux ou trois jours d’école. Les élèves pourront explorer différents aspects d’une tournée théâtrale : comment monter et défaire un décor, comment prendre en charge les accessoires et costumes et comment s’adapter aux différents espaces de représentation. Les places sont limitées.
